Variable 5-Axis Milling
Variable 5-Axis Milling for faster, more precise results
CED Variable 5-Axis Milling is a key part of the high-performance machining advantages we offer. This versatile technology machines very complex parts with unmatched flexibility and unwavering precision — all with incredible speed. That’s because Variable 5-Axis Milling reduces cycle times, increases cutting accuracy, and improves surface finish —all within a single machining cycle.
What Is Variaxis 5-Axis Milling?
Variable 5 -Axis Milling, also called “Variaxis Milling,’ refers to the use of computer-controlled machine tools that can move a cutting tool or part in five different axes simultaneously. Unlike traditional 3-axis machines that move on the X, Y, and Z linear axes, this 5-Axis CNC technology adds two rotary axes “A ”and “B.” These two rotary axes allow the cutting tool to approach the part from virtually any direction.
The 5-Axis Milling process begins with a 3D CAD model of a finished part— something that CED Engineers can assist with if needed. The CAM software then generates toolpaths which will be downloaded to “guide the cutting tool” as it moves dynamically along all five axes. This multi-directional capability reduces the need for repositioning, allowing for the machining of extremely complex geometries with fewer setups. It also delivers highly accurate contouring, deep cavity milling, seamless transitions, and improved surface finishes to meet end-product specs.
Advantages of 5-Axis CNC Machining
Our 5-Axis CNC Milling offers significant advantages beyond faster production times, enhanced part accuracy, and superior surface finishes. Our Variable-Axis Milling can reduce machining time by up to 30% compared to traditional 3-axis or even 4-axis methods.
The ability to machine complex geometries from multiple angles in a single setup eliminates the need for multiple fixtures and repositioning. Because of this, consistency and dimensional control are improved, tool life is extended, downtime is minimized and the chance of human error greatly reduced. Collectively, this all translates into significant cost savings for our customers while maintaining or even enhancing part quality. All told, it is easy to understand why 5-Axis Milling is a cost-effective solution for both single part prototyping right through high-volume production runs.
Versatile applications for demanding industries
By investing in state-of-the-art 5-Axis CNC Machining equipment, CED maintains the ability to meet the specifications of demanding industries that require machined parts with intricate features and tight dimensional tolerances. In the Aerospace Sector, 5-Axis maMilling enables the creation of lightweight, strong components with intricate geometry. In Medical Manufacturing, it ensures the exacting tolerances required for implants and surgical tools. In the Automotive Sector, it supports the rapid production of molds, dies, and high-performance engine components. Whether the need is high precision or complex part geometry, 5-Axis Variable Milling delivers.
