Wire EDM Machining at CED

CED Wire EDM Machining for intricate manufacturing results

Wire EDM stands for “Wire Electrical Discharge Machining”— a service that CED Services quality-manages through the abilities of established and proven Wire EDM outsource partners. Like all our CNC Machining Services, we painstakingly specify, monitor, and validate every aspect of this highly detailed machining process to ensure the end product delivers the spec-meeting intricacy andf consistency your part program demands.

How Wire EDM works

With Wire EDM, conducive materials can be machined through the administering of electrical current that “cuts away” at the material to form complicated shapes. With this process, the material to be cut is secured to a grounded workpiece bracket to form an electrode. A second electrode is formed by stringing an “EDM wire”  between two electrically charged, moving brackets that are CNC-controlled. The entire assembly is then submerged in circulating deionized water or a similar non-conducting “dielectric fluid.”

The EDM machining process occurs when electric current is pulsed through the EDM wire electrode as it is strategically moved around the workpiece. The discharge of high energy current between the wire and the workpiece cuts away material with incredible precision. The moving dielectric fluid helps to cool the workpiece temperature and manage sparking. The fluid also helps to flush away particles as they are removed so they don’t interfere with the forming process.

Repeatability advantages of Wire EDM

Advanced Wire EDM can be used for cutting very delicate, highly detailed shapes out of virtually any conductive material with pin-point accuracy and unwavering consistency. This is due in part to the fact there is no metal-on-metal cutting friction, so tool wear and retooling are never a concern.

Because of this repeatable accuracy, Wire EDM Machining is often a preferred choice for manufacturing prototypes and low-volume special-use parts needed for Aerospace, Medical, and other critical applications.
